The Advent Field Guide (2020 Edition)

Over the last few years I have been frequently asked by friends, family, and people in the churches we have served in about our Advent practices. I’m sure for many, it seems odd that a boy from a Pentecostal background would observe something like Advent. For some, it has been reconnecting with their own roots of how they were raised. But for most people I’ve talked to about Advent, it’s about taking up something ancient for the Church, but new for them–something countercultural–something that anchors.

What I realized is that our family’s Advent practices have evolved and grown over time. As our kids have gotten older, so have our Advent traditions changed. As we’ve learned more, different elements and practices of Advent have become more meaningful to us. But I’ve never taken the time to actually write down what we do. So this is my first attempt at doing just that. I thought 2020, in all of its apocalyptic themes, could use a little sprucing up. My hope is that you can benefit from some or all of this “Advent Field Guide.”
